And so began my new life. It wasn’t exactly a life of crime, because there’s no law – human or natural – against making new friends and inviting yourself over to supper. I began paying calls on several different ladies. I avoided ladies with resident chaps, yippity-yappers or fellow felines. I always watched carefully before making my moves. I couldn’t believe the number living alone in their apartments, watching telly and drinking wine or gin and tonic or endless cups of tea. Some of them were old and had wrinkles, and others were a bit rackety and much younger and played awful music, but most of them seemed happy to invite me in for some quality time.

And I knew how to show my gratitude, which is always important when you are trying to get people to like you. I knew exactly how to smooge up to them, to purr in just the right tones as they stroked my soft fur or tickled me under the chin. I brushed against them with my whiskers and rubbed against their feet when they were standing in the kitchen whipping up something delightful for our supper. Then again, an important part of being liked is knowing when to make yourself scarce. You can be very welcome one moment and a nuisance the next. I had already learnt this from life with my mother, and now I put this knowledge into practice, never outstaying my welcome, tuned in to the emotions of whichever lady I was visiting, ready to leave as soon as I felt she had had enough of me.

I stayed away if friends were visiting. And if someone arrived unexpectedly I would nick off without making a fuss. During the hot summer everyone tends to leave windows or doors open in the evenings. I would slip out when a visitor came in and disappear into the bushes.

And I would make a point of going home before morning, as I didn’t think it was a good idea to worry mother too much. After all, she was my mother and she had been looking after me for a long while. She did say, more than once, that I was getting very fat. She thought it was because I wasn’t doing enough exercise. Sometimes at night she would push me out of the door and tell me to go take a long walk. Of course I was happy to go, but she didn’t realize there would be another tasty supper waiting at the end of it.

One night I was visiting round at Dexy’s place. Dexy was one of my younger lady friends. She was living alone while her flatmate was travelling in India. Dexy seemed very fond of this flatmate. She used to talk to her on the computer, it’s called Skyping. How weird, that one person can be in some dump in Rishikesh supposedly doing silent meditation and be talking in secret to another person in steamy summer Sydney who has been in bed all day downloading trashy action movies onto her Macbook.
